Cover and replace text in a PDF without uploading
Put new words over old ones, add text anywhere, and add pictures on your device. This doesn't truly edit or re-flow the original text: the old text stays in the file underneath. Use Redact to remove text for good.
How to cover and replace text in a PDF
Choose or drop your PDF.
Open the editor. Drag a box over text to cover and replace it, or add text and pictures anywhere.
Add the changes to the PDF and save it.
Frequently asked questions
Is this real text editing?
No. The page isn't re-flowed. “Cover and replace” paints a box in the page’s background colour over the old words and writes your text on top, so the page looks changed. The old text is still in the file and can be selected, copied or found by search.
How do I remove text for good?
Use Redact. It rebuilds the marked pages as flat images, so the removed text is really gone.
Can I type in any language?
Yes. Text in basic Latin letters, as in English or Spanish, is added as real text in a standard font. Other scripts, such as Cyrillic or Japanese, are added as a picture of the text drawn on your device: it looks right but can't be searched.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The PDF is read and changed by code running in this browser tab. The tools page blocks network connections for file processing, so the document, its pages, and any password you type stay on your device.
How large can the PDF be?
Up to 150 MB per file, 300 MB in total when you work with several files, and 500 pages. Very large or complex documents also depend on your device’s memory.
Is it free?
Yes. The PDF tools are free to use, need no account, and add no watermark.
