How to password protect a PDF

  1. Choose or drop the PDF you want to protect.

  2. Type the password twice. Untick printing, copying, or editing if readers shouldn’t do those things.

  3. Save the protected copy. Your original file stays unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

How strong is the protection?

The copy is encrypted with AES-256. Its strength depends on the password: use a long one that isn’t used anywhere else.

Can I recover a forgotten password?

No. DocuChan never stores or sends the password, so nobody can recover it. Keep the original or the password somewhere safe.

Why only basic Latin characters?

PDF apps don’t agree on how to read accented or non-Latin characters in this kind of password, so a file could open in one app and not another. A–Z, digits, spaces, and symbols work everywhere.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The PDF is read and changed by code running in this browser tab. The tools page blocks network connections for file processing, so the document, its pages, and any password you type stay on your device.

How large can the PDF be?

Up to 150 MB per file, 300 MB in total when you work with several files, and 500 pages. Very large or complex documents also depend on your device’s memory.

Is it free?

Yes. The PDF tools are free to use, need no account, and add no watermark.
